VAT at 8.5%? What the 29 November Vote Means for SMEs

On 29 November, Switzerland votes on raising VAT to 8.5% to help fund the 13th AHV pension. What would change for SMEs, and what to prepare.

On 29 November 2026, Swiss voters will decide whether VAT should be increased to finance part of the 13th AHV pension. If the proposal is accepted, the rates would change as follows:

  • Standard rate 8.1% → 8.5%

  • Hotel accommodation 3.8% → 4.0%

  • Reduced rate 2.6%, unchanged

This would apply from the start of 2028 at the earliest and would bring the AHV around CHF 1.5 billion per year.
